Sammi Kinghorn Joins Glasgow 2026 as Athlete Ambassador
Glasgow 2026 is proud to welcome Sammi Kinghorn OBE – Britain’s fastest ever female wheelchair racer – as the latest Athlete Ambassador for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Since bursting onto the wheelchair racing scene in 2012, Sammi has established herself as one of the sport’s most dynamic talents. She now holds the title of fastest female British wheelchair athlete in history over all distances from 100m to 800m.
Just two years after taking up the sport, Sammi was one of the very first athletes to be selected for Team Scotland’s Glasgow 2014 squad and made her Commonwealth Games debut in front of a home crowd. After finishing fifth in the T54 1500m final in Glasgow, she improved her result by finishing fourth at Gold Coast 2018 before securing her long-awaited podium moment at Birmingham 2022, where a nail-biting final saw her clinch the bronze medal.
Speaking on her appointment as an official Glasgow 2026 Ambassador, she said:
“I’m over the moon to be joining the Glasgow 2026 team as an official ambassador. Sport can truly change lives, and I can’t wait to see the positive impact the Games will have across the city of Glasgow and beyond.”
Sammi’s success extends far beyond the Commonwealth Games. A multiple World and European champion, she reached new heights at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, claiming a gold medal in the T53 100m and four silver medals (T53 400m, T53 800m, T54 1500m and Mixed 4x100m Relay), adding to the bronze she earned in the T53 100m at Tokyo 2020.
Her appointment as an Athlete Ambassador comes during Scottish Disability Sport Week, and with Glasgow 2026 set to host the biggest para sport programme in Commonwealth Games history, the Paralympic champion hopes to play her part in inspiring the next generation.
“It means so much to me to be part of the journey towards next summer. With the largest para sport programme in Games history and the first medal of the Games being awarded in a para event, I know Glasgow 2026 can help inspire a new generation of athletes across all levels.
“We are 100% in store for an amazing 11 days of competition when it comes around!”
Sammi’s arrival as a Games Ambassador marks another important milestone on the road to 11 days of world-class competition next summer, when Glasgow will once again shine on the global sporting stage.
