History-seeking Nowacki headlines Jersey’s Glasgow 2026 squad
Reigning World and European junior swimming champion Filip Nowacki will have the chance to win Jersey’s first Commonwealth Games medal for 36 years after being named in the team for Glasgow 2026.
The 18-year-old claimed his maiden British title in April, topping the Commonwealth rankings for his favoured 200m Breaststroke discipline with a time of two minutes and 8.52 seconds.
Nowacki, who won two silver medal and bronze at the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2023, currently ranks third in the Commonwealth 100m Breaststroke standings, behind his English idol and mentor Adam Ramsay-Peaty and Canadian Oliver Dawson.
The last athlete from Jersey to claim a medal at the Commonwealth Games was shooter Colin Mallett, who won gold in the Full Bore Rifle event at Auckland 1990.
“I’m really looking forward to being able to represent Jersey on the senior Commonwealth Games stage,” Nowacki told Glasgow 2026. “It’s very special and something I’m very proud of.”
“Last year I obviously had a great year and the external noise and pressure is something I’ve had to get used to. It’s taken a massive amount to get used to it, but I’m taking it into account now and I’m just looking forward to giving it my best shot.”
Nowacki is one of nine swimmers selected as part of Team Jersey’s Glasgow 2026 line-up, while Jersey’s five-strong athletics team is the largest the island has ever sent to a Commonwealth Games.
Evan Campbell and Lucy Woodward will become the first islanders to compete in multi-sport events when they contest their respective decathlon and heptathlon disciplines.
Bowler Malcolm de Sousa will represent Jersey at his fifth Commonwealth Games, having made his debut at Delhi 2010, while Steven Rabet is the first judoka to compete for the Commonwealth Games Association since 1990.
Seven of the nine athletes who compete for Jersey at the 2023 Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago, have now progressed to their senior team, including five of Nowacki’s fellow swimmers.
“As an association we’re incredibly proud to have seven of our athletes from the 2023 Youth Games selected to represent Jersey in Glasgow,” said Chef de Mission Jean Cross.
“Supporting a pathway into senior elite sport is really important to us and hopefully this will inspire others, as we look ahead to the next Youth Games in Malta in 2027 and then on to India in 2030.
Cross concluded; “The excitement is building and I’m looking forward to seeing all of our talented athletes in action.”
