Champions headline 114-strong Team Wales Glasgow 2026 squad
Olympic champion Matt Richards and Emma Funicane as well as reigning Paralympic gold medallist James Ball are among a 114-strong Welsh line-up who will compete for major Commonwealth Games honours at Glasgow 2026.
Para Cyclist Ball is joined by Daniel Salmon (Bowls), Rosie Eccles (Boxing) as well as Olivia Breen and Aled Davies (Para Athletics), who will be looking to defend titles claimed at Birmingham 2022.
Wales will be represented in all 10 sports during the 11-day multi-sport Games, which run from 23 July until 2 August, with their 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball women’s and men’s squads set for Commonwealth Games debuts, after being awarded ‘wildcards’.
Emma Funicane won Team Sprint gold at Paris 2024 alongside Sophie Capewell and Katy Marchant, who will now become rivals with the duo recently confirmed as part of Team England’s line-up for Glasgow 2026.
She will also go up against New Zealand’s Ellesse Andrews, who claimed three gold medals at Glasgow 2026, with Finucane having placed third in two of those events.
“I’m honestly so excited,” she says. “I feel like last time I went I was 19, a bit of a kid and I didn’t really get to take it all in whereas this time around I feel like I really understand the significance.
“Glasgow is one of my favourite velodromes, I won my first World title there in 2023 and it holds so many memories, the crowds are insane and I’m excited to pull on my Welsh kit again.”
Four years ago, Olivia Breen pulled off one of the shock results of the Games when she defeated reigning champion and favourite Sophie Hahn of England in the 100m T38 and admits she would “love” to replicate that “magical experience” once more.
“Obviously competing with Great Britain is special, but with Wales, that’s something else!” enthuses two-time gold medallist Breen.
“Birmingham was probably the best time of my life. The Commonwealth Games is just so special and it's just so great that they have Para events in there, which really helps to get disabled sport out there as much as possible.”
Matt Richards entered Birmingham 2022 off the back of a breakthrough season which had seen him claim Olympic gold as part of Great Britain’s Men’s 4x200m relay team, but he struggled for form and was left “devastated” after being unable to claim a medal.
Since then, he has retained that Olympic title and claimed a host of World as well as European honours and enters Glasgow 2026 top of the Commonwealth rankings in the 100m and 200m Freestyle events.
“The Commonwealths is such a special competition and I absolutely love that meet because it’s the only time that we ever get to represent our home nation, our families and our heritage,” Richards tells Glasgow 2026.
“In 2022 I didn’t swim that well, so I’m going into this year’s event with a bit of a ‘chip on my shoulder’ and something that I want to prove. I can’t wait to get the dragon on I’m just buzzing about the opportunity.”
2025 World Indoor champion sprinter Jeremiah Azu and Para Athletics World Shot Put bronze medallist Fumni Oduwaiye will both be considered strong medal contenders in their respective events.
As are returning medallists Ross Owen (Bowls) and Medi Harris (Swimming), as well as World Championship podium finisher Ruby Evans (Artistic Gymnastics)
Other ones-to-watch in the Welsh squad include husband and wife Track Cycling duo Ciara and Lewis Oliva, as well as twin sisters Abigale and Emily Roper, who will compete in the Artistic Gymnastics competition.
Adele Nicoll, who competed for Team GB in Bobsleigh at the Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games earlier this year, will complete her “dream double” after being selected to represent Wales in the Women’s Shot Put competition.
“The Commonwealth Games is the only major competition where I get to pull on my Welsh vest so that in itself is so special,” Nicoll tells Glasgow 2026.
“Even trying to ‘do the double’ is a bit crazy, but I just want my story and my journey to inspire the children that are growing up in these areas (around Wales) where they think these opportunities are readily available to them.
“My message to them is, ‘the opportunities are there, you just have to open the door’ and that is exactly how I’ve lived my life.”
