Team Scotland confirms star-studded Athletics squad bound for Glasgow
Team Scotland has unveiled a 39-strong athletics squad for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, featuring Olympic and World Championship medallists alongside a host of exciting newcomers ready to compete on home soil.
The team includes some of Scotland’s biggest names in track and field, with Olympic silver medallist Laura Muir, world champion Josh Kerr, European champion Jake Wightman and Commonwealth champion and Glasgow 2026 Ambassador Eilish McColgan all set to compete in Glasgow this summer.
A further 28 athletes have now been confirmed following the earlier pre-selection of Jake Wightman, Neil Gourley and Megan Keith, as well as eight Para athletes announced last month, including Paralympic champion and world record holder Ben Sandilands.
The squad blends experience with emerging talent, with 11 athletes arriving in Glasgow fresh from medal-winning performances at last weekend’s British Athletics Championships in Birmingham.
Among those returning for another Commonwealth Games appearance are McColgan in the 10,000m and hammer thrower Chris Bennett, both preparing for their fourth Games alongside Wightman. Laura Muir and discuss thrower Nick Percy will make their third appearances, while Andrew Butchart returns for his second Games.
Several athletes will make their Commonwealth Games debuts, including newly crowned British champions Sarah Calvert and long jumper Stephen Mackenzie, who produced a Scottish record leap of 8.15m to secure the national title. Hammer thrower Angela McAuslan-Kelly and decathletes Callum Newby and Joel McFarlane also join the team after impressive recent performances.
The Commonwealth Mile promises to be one of the highlights of the athletics programme, with Kerr joining Wightman and Gourley in a formidable Scottish men’s line-up. On the women’s side, Calvert will be joined by Jemma Reekie and Erin Wallace.
Team Scotland will also contest the Mixed 4x400m and Women’s 4x100m relays, with relay specialists combining with individual event athletes to form strong medal-contending squads.
Speaking ahead of the Games, Laura Muir said the prospect of competing in front of a home crowd makes Glasgow 2026 particularly special.
“I think just having that Scottish crowd is absolutely unreal.
I’ve been very fortunate to compete in 2014 and have done World and European Indoors in Glasgow, and the crowd is phenomenal, you can’t beat it.”
