Finnie, Glasgow 2026 volunteers and young people from Barmulloch Community Development Company came together on Thursday to officially open the Commonwealth Mile — a mile-long installation marking the return of the iconic Athletics event to the Commonwealth Games.

It gives everyone the chance to experience the distance athletes will cover in this iconic Athletics event as it returns to the Commonwealth Games. The Glasgow 2026 Men’s and Women’s One Mile Finals are taking place at Scotstoun Stadium on Saturday 1 August.

The installation runs from Clyde Place Quay in Tradeston, across the Squiggly Bridge and west towards the SEC. Two Glasgow 2026 archways mark either end of the distance, with markers featuring Finnie along the route.

The Commonwealth Mile is just one of the many ways to get involved with Glasgow 2026 beyond the sporting action in venues.

Game On at Kelvingrove Park

The programme for the Kelvingrove Park Game On Live Site has also been revealed, offering free activities, live sport, performances and plenty of opportunities to get involved throughout the 11 days of the Games.

Whether you're looking to try a new sport, watch the action on the big screen, cheer on your favourite athletes or simply enjoy the atmosphere with family and friends, there will be something for everyone.

More than 20 sports will be represented at the Live Site, with local sporting groups and organisations offering fun, interactive ways to get active and try something new.

Multiple screens will show live action from across the Games, while visitors will also have the chance to meet athletes from across the Glasgow 2026 sporting programme.

And, of course, Finnie will be making regular appearances throughout the Games, leading fun activities and helping everyone get involved.

Sport, culture and creativity

It's not all about sport. Visitors can also take part in arts and crafts activities led by Glasgow-based artists, communities and organisations, alongside dance, aerial and movement performances.

There will also be opportunities to try different dance styles and get involved in activities for people of all ages and abilities.

Awaz FM, Scotland's leading Asian radio network, will also be based at the Live Site throughout the Games. The station will host live shows featuring interviews with athletes, visitors and members of the local community.

Louisa Mahon, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, Glasgow 2026, said: “With just one week to go until Glasgow 2026 begins, we can’t wait to welcome athletes and visitors from across the Commonwealth to the city.

Our Commonwealth Mile and the fun-packed offer at our Kelvingrove Park Game On Live Site are brilliant ways to get involved with the Games on top of the 11 days of fantastic sporting action. They’re free, inclusive and family-friendly – with lots of hands-on fun at Kelvingrove that everyone can enjoy, no matter their age or ability.

“Pack your sunscreen and a cagoule and come and join us across the city and be part of an unforgettable summer of sport.”

Martin Reynolds, Deputy Chief Executive of Commonwealth Sport, said: "The Commonwealth Games are about much more than what happens in the venues. They are an opportunity to bring communities together, inspire the next generation and create moments that everyone can be part of.

The Commonwealth Mile and the Game On Live Site will help people experience the excitement of Glasgow 2026 beyond the field of play. Whether you're following the action on the big screens, trying a new sport or simply enjoying the atmosphere with family and friends, these are the moments that help make the Commonwealth Games such a special celebration for the whole community."

Forbes Dunlop, sportscotland CEO said: “At sportscotland, we believe sport has the power to inspire and strengthen communities. The Game On Live Site provides a unique opportunity for people from across Scotland and beyond to come together, take part in free activities, celebrate sporting moments and be inspired by our Scottish athletes.

“We’re building on the excitement of the 2026 Summer of Sport campaign to help more people access opportunities to be active, supporting healthier, happier and more connected communities to enjoy the benefits that sport can bring."
