Within an hour, Ellis Trowbridge (ENG) joined his teammate in the Round of 16 when he forced a referee’s stoppage with little over a minute on the clock, defeating Vanuatu’s Ricksen Nomleas in the Men’s 55kg. The charismatic Englishman left the ring in jubilant mood.

“I’m not here to play about,” Trowbridge said. “I'm going in there and I'm going in to do a job, and if I feel I can get you out of there, that's what I'm going to do.

“I've missed that in the past, that little killer instinct, and I'm bringing it for this Commonwealth Games.”

By the end of the day, England had notched four wins from four as Lucy Kings-Wheatley and Patris Mughalzai won their bouts.

Unanimous decision

It was a terrific first day for Lesotho too, with three of their boxers making it through. Most impressive was Mathealira Seholoholo who knocked out Louis Rooney from Northern Ireland in the Men’s 55kg with a devastating right hook after a close first round.

Pooana Khoahli also won, against De Niro Pao of Niue in the Men’s 65kg, but the unanimous decision verdict underplays an exciting contest. The competitors could only be separated in the third round when Khoahli piled pressure on to win the judges' approval.

Pao’s given name has sparked much talk at the Games, given he shares it with the star of classic boxing movie Raging Bull.

“Robert De Niro's my mum's favourite actor, so she kind of named us after after him pretty much," he said.

“It's funny because that's my grandad's favourite actor too, and he always tells me about it (Raging Bull). I've never seen it.”

Scotland were in action in the evening. First, Aaron Cullen had a difficult task in the Men’s 55kg against Jadumani Singh Mandengbam, one of the day's most anticipated contests. The energetic Indian controlled the space well, coming away with a comfortable win on points.

Glasgow's own Leo Church would send the crowd into a roar, ensuring the night would finish positively for the Scots. The 20-year-old progressed to the Men’s 65kg Round of 16 after defeating Vi-J Tebouwa of Nauru.

Papua New Guinea’s James Paul nudged himself through in the same competition with a 3-2 split decision victory over Rashield Williams of the Bahamas. Also in the Men’s 65kg, New Zealand’s Connor Campbell defeated Fiji’s Ben Maukakala by referee’s stoppage.
