The men’s quartet rounded off a satisfying start for the 2022 silver medallists with a 21-14 victory over hosts Scotland, who had won their first two matches.

Australia earlier edged an opening trans-Tasman tussle with New Zealand 21-15 and overcome Nigeria by the same score.

“We were the first cab off the rank, and even this morning at 10 o’clock Glasgow was pumping. It was even louder tonight in here playing the home team,” Australia's Jesse Wagstaff said.

“We have played three really good games against some good opposition, especially Scotland at prime time this evening, so to come away with three wins is great.”

Hall 4 hummed with excitement as Scotland, inspired by Skyler White, overcame a nervy start to beat Guyana 21-14 in a raucous atmosphere in their opener. A 22-13 win over Cayman Islands followed and the hosts pushed Australia before fading down the stretch.

White, born in Seattle, USA, but with roots in Ayrshire via a father from Kilmarnock, celebrated successful shots with a roar and double fist-pump, with the crowd responding to his promptings.

“I love this kind of stuff,” said the 32-year-old, who described his Commonwealth Games debut - watched by his parents, wife and two children - as a “damn cool experience”.

“I love competing with my team-mates," he said.

"I love these guys and I just want greatness for us, for them, for Scotland. I want to make a name for ourselves and have all our names etched in the history books.”

Australia’s women, bronze medallists at Birmingham 2022, also started impressively, beating Kenya 21-5 and overcoming Jamaica 21-13 before concluding the evening session with a comfortable 21-3 win over Fiji.

The opening day of women's action also saw two dramatic overtime finishes, as Uganda pipped Jamaica 18-17 while Kenya earned an emotional 16-14 victory over Fiji.

England have edge over Australia in Wheelchair Basketball

In the opening action in the Wheelchair Basketball 3x3, England’s men upset Birmingham 2022 champions Australia 16-13 in an engrossing encounter, with Harvey Thomas and Peter Cusack both nailing vital two-pointers to close out the victory.

“It is a big win but we are not getting too excited yet,” said Cusack. “We are here to win it, but if we are going to do that, we are probably going to have to play (Australia) again at some point.

“We made some tough shots and we were well drilled in our defence and rotations, so we will take confidence from that. But I know there is another level to go to.”

Canada, silver medallists in 2022, also started strongly with a 16-3 win over Kenya.

There was another England-Australia contest in the women’s competition, with the European side enjoying a 16-6 victory to kick-start their quest to turn bronze from Birmingham 2022 into gold at Glasgow 2026.

“We like a challenge and that is what we are aiming for,” England's Charlotte Moore said. “We went out there with the physicality we needed to start this tournament against a very good team.

“Defensively we were strong and we used that to our advantage. We were quite relaxed and had confidence in each other.”

The other match saw defending champions Canada, including two of their winning team from 2022 in Kady Dandeneau and Elodie Tessier, ease to a 19-3 win over South Africa.
