The sport is well underway in Scotland's largest city. Here's what the athletes have had to say as Games fever begins to hit.

Scottish bowler Jason Banks had some food for thought ahead of his Men's Singles clash with Mohammed Ayub Qureshi of Pakistan, who owns a tandoori restaurant in Glasgow:

"I haven't been this week, I was too scared before I played him in case he spiced up my food too much (laughs)." 

Northern Ireland's Rhys McClenaghan was blown away by the atmosphere at Glasgow International Arena for the Artistic Gymnastics, presented by Longines:

“It’s a really special feeling competing here. In the gymnastics world, you don't get a packed arena for qualifications very often. So when you're here in an arena like today, you know you're part of something special."

The vagaries of sharing a room are not lost on New Zealand gymnast Mikhail Koudinov: 

“I thought Dan (Stoddart, teammate) was still in the food hall. So, I opened the bathroom door and there he is just getting up from the potty. But I didn't see anything, I promise.”

Daniel Bos, actor and men's lightweight paralifter from Australia, may have appeared in Hollywood movies but he was lost for words after stepping out to compete in the Men's Lightweight Para Powerlifting, presented by Amul: 

"The whole atmosphere here, the crowd, that was crazy. That gave me a massive adrenaline rush. It's really surreal because you sort of have these little moments on stage where I'm like ... 'This is it now. We're here'."

Niue boxer De Niro Pao (pictured above), all smiles despite losing the best fight of Friday's first session against Lesotho’s Pooana Khoahli, explained how he got his unusual first name:

"Robert De Niro is my mum's favourite actor, so she named me after him, and it’s funny because that's my granddad's favourite actor too. He always tells me about (the movie) Raging Bull, but I've never seen it though."

Ellis Trowbridge, of England, got the better of his Men's 55kg Round of 32 opponent Ricksen Nomleas, of Vanuatu, and stressed that Boxing remains a serious business:  

"This is my job – boxing – and it's not a joke in there. You hear the term, 'You can't play boxing', and I'm really understanding that now. It's like no other sport. This one we can't play, so I'm not here to play, and I demonstrated that today." 

Lani Pallister on following her godmother, Australian swimming great Dawn Fraser, and her mother Janelle Pallister, a Commonwealth champion, into the record books by grabbing gold in the Women's 400m Freestyle: 

"The title is really exciting, it’s obviously going through the legacy with my mum and Dawn. Having my first one on the board I’m stoked with and to have the first event of the (Swimming) meet go to Australia is awesome." 

Scotland Men’s 3x3 Basketball star Skyler White is loving competing in front of a home crowd, and the feeling is very much reciprocated:

“I love this kind of stuff. I love to compete, I love the game of basketball, whether it is five on five or 3x3. I love competing with my team-mates, I love these guys and I just want greatness for us, for them, for Scotland. I want to make a name for ourselves and have all our names etched in the history books.”
