Glasgow opens new doors across the Commonwealth

Tonga made their Commonwealth Games netball debut against defending champions Australia, marking a significant moment for a nation of just over 100,000 people that has climbed into the world’s top 10.

Captain Hulita Veve led the team onto court after a journey shaped by motherhood, migration and personal loss. She stepped away from the sport at 21 to have her first son before returning to international netball, partly inspired by the memory of her father and his ambition to see her represent Tonga.

There was another landmark in women’s wheelchair 3x3 basketball, where India entered a Commonwealth Games para team sport for the first time. Wales also made their debut in the event as Glasgow’s Para sport programme brought new countries into the competition.

Sri Lanka’s Tiana Sumanasekera began a different Commonwealth journey in artistic gymnastics. The California-raised 18-year-old previously represented the United States at junior level and trained alongside Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles before choosing to compete for the country of her parents’ birth.

A shoulder injury limited her to the balance beam, but her appearance marked the beginning of a new international chapter with Sri Lanka.

The biggest breakthrough of the day came in the pool, where Jersey’s Filip Nowacki won silver in the men’s 100m breaststroke to end the island’s 36-year wait for a Commonwealth Games medal.

The 18-year-old finished just 0.17 seconds behind Australia’s Sam Williamson, with England’s Adam Ramsay-Peaty taking bronze.

It was Jersey’s first Commonwealth medal since Auckland 1990 and only the fifth in the island’s history.

Nowacki’s result also showed the progression from the Commonwealth Youth Games to the senior stage. He won two silver medals and a bronze at Trinbago 2023 before reaching the podium in Glasgow three years later.

There may yet be more to come. Nowacki returns for the 200m breaststroke on Tuesday, his strongest event.
