Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq, Mirabai Chanu Saikhom and Aznil Bin Bidin Muhamad demonstrated the experience of champions to add to their Commonwealth Games Weightlifting titles at the SEC Armadillo on Sunday. 

Malaysian pair Mohamad Aniq (pictured) and Muhamad triumphed in the Men’s 60kg and Men's 65kg respectively, and Chanu Saikhom of India led the field in the women’s 48kg.

All three lifters won gold at Birmingham 2022, while Chanu Saikhom and Muhamad also topped the podium at Gold Coast 2018.

Mohamad Aniq held off strong challenges from India’s Rishikanta Singh Chanambam, who claimed silver, and Kenya’s Joshua Amunga Mboya who took bronze – Kenya’s first Weightlifting Commonwealth Games medal since Victoria 1994.

The Malaysian took control when he lifted 145kg on his first clean and jerk attempt. He then set a Games record when he lifted 149kg on his second attempt and extended the mark further with 152kg on his final attempt. 

He broke out a dance and then grooved his way off stage and into his coaches’ waiting arms. 

"I’m very happy because this was my target this year," Mohamad Aniq said. "It was a difficult and tough competition, and they were very strong.

"It is great to retain my gold medal from the Commonwealth Games.”

Golden hat-trick

Chanu Saikhom led after the snatch. In the clean and jerk she waited until the bar reached 105kg and the rest of the field had used all three attempts before she stepped up for the first time. 

She failed in her first try but succeeded in her second to complete her hat-trick of Commonwealth Games golds. In doing so, she became the first female lifter to win three Commonwealth Games gold medals. 

Nigeria’s Ruth Asuquo Nyong took silver, with Malaysia’s Irene Jane Henry claiming bronze. 

“Weightlifting has changed my life, and I am a very proud lifter,” Chanu Saikhom said.

“It is a privilege to represent India and win medals for my country. It is my third Commonwealth Games gold, and it was very hard because of my opponents.”

Muhamad secured Malaysia’s second Weightlifting gold of the day with a dominant showing. He set a Games record in the snatch with 133kg and then lifted 162kg for his first lift in the clean and jerk, before stretching his lead further with 166kg. 

"I have won three times and this win inspires me to try and win it for a fourth time," the 32-year-old said. "When I do well at the Commonwealth Games, it gives me more motivation to chase my ultimate goal, which is qualifying for the Olympics."

India’s Raja Muthupandi settled for silver, while Papua New Guinea’s Morea Baru took bronze, his nation’s first medal at Glasgow 2026.
