“The more you win, the more the competition starts heating up,” said Moremi, who was deemed by the judges to have had overall control of the bout. “I’m ready for the quarter-finals.”

He will be joined in the last eight by, among others, India’s Sachin Siwach and Tryagain Morning Ndevelo (NAM). Standing in the way of the Namibian will be Niall Adams, who is looking to claim Guernsey’s first Commonwealth boxing medal.

“I feel amazing that I have the opportunity to do that, and I’m desperate to win it,” said Adams, who beat Sri Lankan Ravindu Jayanath 4-1.

“I’m just enjoying it, it felt great in there. I had to wait a week before going into this fight because we got here on Tuesday.

“I’ve just been mincing around the hotel, shadow boxing in the room, walking a lot.”

Another boxer looking to put his small island nation on the boxing map is Jade Micock of the Seychelles, which has never won a Commonwealth Boxing gold medal. The Men’s 80kg fighter, who turned 19 on Sunday, is through to the quarter-finals after a split-decision win against Eoghan Quinn (NIR).

“There was no partying, my goal was to give myself a gift by winning my first bout and that’s what I’ve done,” Micock said. “This is the game plan for me and today my coach said, ‘Jade when I was still a boxer, I fought an Ireland guy, southpaw guy’, and he beat the guy.

“He said today we're going to do the same thing as he did, and that's what I did today, and prove to him that I am what I say I am.”

It was better news in the 70kg category for another Northern Irishman, Jon McConnell, one of two boxers from the country who passed the interview stage for reality television show Love Island but withdrew their interest when selected for Glasgow 2026.

After beating India’s Sumit Kundu in a ding-dong bout, McConnell will be coupled with Carl Hield – 16 years his senior – of the Bahamas in Wednesday’s quarter-finals.
