Canada's Josh Liendo breaks Commonwealth record in Men’s 100m Butterfly Swimming at Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games
On July 26, Canadian Josh Liendo broke a Commonwealth Record while taking home the gold in the Men's 100m Butterfly Swimming competition at the Commonwealth Games
One of the stand-out swimming stars from Birmingham 2022, Josh Liendo, immediately impressed in the pool at Glasgow 2026.
Liendo enjoyed a medal-laden summer at Birmingham 2022. He had four trips to the podium, including earning his maiden senior individual title in the 100m Butterfly, which followed a silver and two bronzes at the world championships earlier in the season.
“People call it my breakout summer,” the 23-year-old said at the time.
“I was at the Olympics the year before but that was me gaining experience, making semis. I was able to go past that and get a medal at worlds.
“Then I carried that momentum and medalled at Commonwealth Games.
“It was good and a very exciting summer and it’s a full-circle moment here. I’m just excited to give it another go.”
This time around Josh earned Canada a gold medal thanks to his incredible speed in the Men's 100m Butterfly competition at Tollcross. Electric from the gun, Liendo was ahead throughout but ultimately only a perfectly timed touch secured the Canadian gold, one-hundredth-of-a-second ahead of Australian Matthew Temple.
He broke a Commonwealth Games Record in the process with a time of just 50.42 - breaking the former Commonwealth Record, 50.65, held by Chad le Clos set at Gold Coast 2018. Liendo currently holds the World Record in the category, with a time of 47.68 set at the Swimming World Cup in 2025.
