Kiwi Joshua Willmer may have taken home silver for his home nation of New Zealand, but he did beat a Commonwealth Games record in the process.

The 21-year-old is seen as one New Zealand's most exciting Para-Swimming talents, establishing himself internationally when he struck gold in the 100m Breaststroke SB8 category at Birmingham 2022. 

A feat even more impressive when he was swimming in a race above his sports classification. Willmer is used to racing in SB8, but had to adapt to race within SB9 as Glasgow 2026 didn't run a race for his usual classification.

Josh put on an incredible display nonetheless, trailing fourth through 50 metres before powering into third place in the second half. Willmer originally came in bronze, but due to his Canadian rival Fernando Lu being disqualified, he had his medal upgraded to silver, coming in behind Australian Beau Matthews.

In the 100m S8 category, Joshua Willmer broke a Commonwealth Games record with a time of 1:11.44. The original record, 1:12.45 set by Timothy Disken at Gold Coast 2018, was smashed by Willmer by a whole second.

In the heats alone, Josh Willmer managed to break the record with a time of 1:11.99 - but upgraded his time in the final match.
