On July 27, Erry Hidayat Muhammad of Team Malaysia broke two Commonwealth Games records in the Men's 79kg Weightlifting category
Muhammad Erry Hidayat’s Commonwealth journey began at the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games, where he won gold for Malaysia - now 11 years later, he's at the top of the Commonwealth rankings in his weight class, and has taken a gold medal home to his country.
He claimed silver in the men’s 73kg division at Birmingham 2022, but now Hidayat has completed the journey from Youth Games champion to senior Commonwealth champion.
Canada’s Shad Darsigny and Nigeria’s Adedapo Adeleke Opadeji were considered amongst his strongest rivals, but dark horse Valluri Ajaya Babu of India gave the Commonwealth veteran a run for his money, coming in second just behind the Malaysian weightlifter by a margin of just 1kg. Babu also lifted more than Hidayat in the Snatch, meaning then Indian weightlifter claimed the Commonwealth Games record of 149kg - as Hidayat was only able to life 147kg in the Snatch.
In the Men's 79kg division, Muhammad Erry Hidayat broke the Commonwealths Games record in the Clean & Jerk, with a lift of 184kg. 6kg higher than the established record of 178kg - but 3kg short of the Commonwealth Record, 187kg, that the Malaysian weightlifter had set himself at the Southeast Asian Games.
