Brock Whiston lit up the Tollcross International Swimming Centre as she set a new Commonwealth Games record on her way to winning gold in the women’s 100m breaststroke SB8 final.

The 29-year-old came home in a blistering time of 1:22.05, over four seconds quicker than Uganda’s Husnah Kukundakwe, who took silver on July 27.

She knocked nearly five seconds off her time from the morning's heats to set a new Commonwealth Games record time of 1:22.05 and add Commonwealth gold to her Paralympic silver in the Women's SB8 100m Breaststroke.

“I just went out fast because I knew I had to,” said Whiston. “We’d been training the back end of the race really hard, so I trusted the work I’d done and trusted the process. Thankfully, it all paid off.”

The moment was extra special for Whiston as she was able to top the podium in front of her parents, who were watching on.

“My dad came to watch me race for the first time in 17 years, so to win gold with him here means everything,” the 2024 Paralympic gold medallist explained.

“To have both my mum and dad here makes it the most special one. He doesn’t really understand swimming at all. He can swim a little bit, but he’s definitely not a swimming fan.

“He isn’t allowed to watch my races live on TV. He has to watch them afterwards. At the Paralympics he watched the replay, and today he actually left the stands while I was racing and came back once I’d finished.”
