Canada's Reid Maxwell breaks Commonwealth Games Record in Men’s 100m Backstroke S9
Canada's Reid Maxwell delivered a sensational swim to break the Commonwealth Games record in the Men's 100m Backstroke S9, producing one of the standout performances of Glasgow 2026.
Maxwell broke the games record for the Men's 100m Backstroke S9 on July 26 with a time of 1:08.85. The previous record was held by Australia's Timothy Hodge with a time of 1:01.88 from Birmingham 2022.
The 18-year-old broke five Canadian records at the 2024 Paralympic Swimming Trials and beat the A standard in the S8 400m freestyle and 100 backstroke to qualify for his first Paralympic Games at age 16.
Maxwell then won silver in the 400m Freestyle S8 at Paris 2024 and also claimed a second-place finish at the 2025 Para Swimming World Championships in the 200m Individual Medley SM8 event.
