The Australian quartet made up of Meg Harris, Shayna Jack, Alex Perkins and Mollie O'Callaghan combined explosive speed and flawless baton-like changeovers in the pool to produce a dominant performance and record time of 3:31.40 at Tollcross International Swim Centre on July 24.

 

The Aussies domination of the event at the Commonwealth Games dates back nearly three decades, with the women's team having taken gold at every edition since 1998.

 

Meg Harris, Shayna Jack, Alex Perkins and Mollie O'Callaghan raced to a time of 3:31.40, more than four seconds clear of England's 3:35.66. South Africa was third for the bronze, clocking an African record 3:38.67 to hold off hosts Scotland by 0.36.

 

"I think I might sleep in this," Harris told reporters afterward of the gold medal. "I think it'll be a great atmosphere that we've set up for the week. Hopefully, we can keep that standing going through, so I hope a lot more bus rides will be with more gold medals."
