Wales' Emma Finucane breaks Commonwealth Games record for the Women's Track Cycling Sprint
Wales’ Emma Finucane etched her name into Commonwealth Games history with a stunning record-breaking performance in the Women’s Track Cycling Sprint.
Welsh, Emma Finucane serenely made her way through the rounds to claim Commonwealth Games gold in the women's individual sprint at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome on July 31 at Glasgow 2026 with a time of 10.322 seconds.
Capewell claimed silver for England. Fellow Welshwoman Rhian Edmunds won bronze while Malaysia's Nurul Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri just missed out on a podium spot in fourth.
"I enjoyed every moment out on that track, honestly," Finucane told Olympics.com afterwards. "It was really, really hard. People said to me I looked like I was in control, but when you're racing up against teammates who you know inside and out, the pressure does build up and you get nervous.
"But I went into that final knowing exactly what I needed to do. I knew I could get to the line first, I just had to dig deep and to finish on top is incredible... and to have my family in the crowd as well, it's been a really, really special day."
It was one of many history-making performances for the Welsh team in the velodrome as they smashed the Commonwealth Games record on their way to victory in the women's Team Sprint.
The Welsh trio made up of Emma Finucane, Rhian Edmunds and Lowri Thomas beat England when they powered around the track at a record pace of 46.760 on July 30 to smash the current games record and bring them gold.
The previous games record was held by New Zealand with a time of 47.425 from London, 2022.
